Hal Chase, the "Black prince of baseball," was one of the most popular players of his era and continues to be revered among collectors today.  Indeed, the T206 set contains five different cards of Chase, more than even Ty Cobb.

This example, the "holding trophy" variation, depicts Chase receiving a silver "loving cup," a gift given to him at his 1909 debut after he spent several weeks in the hospital, suffering from a mild form of smallpox.  As with so many other cards in our auction, this one is produced with a scarce back - the American Beauty 460 variety.  Identified by T206Resource.com as the 11th most scarce back variety, the American Beauty 460 back is more scarce than the brown Hindu back that has generated so much interest as of late.  Thinner than most other T206s, it is theorized that American Beauty packs may have required cards to be cut thinner to fit properly, as many American Beauty-backed T206s are extremely narrow.

Regardless, AB 460-backed Hal Chase cards do not make themselves available every day, making this a highly desirable addition to the sophisticated type card collection.

Population Data
PSA Population: 0 graded*
SGC Population: 0 graded

*NOTE: PSA just recently began categorizing T206 cards by back varieties, and thus it is possible that other AB 460 Chase cards exist, just like this one, which are not counted in their pop reports (note above that PSA's pop reports reflect no American Beauty Chase with trophy cards, and yet there's one right here).  Also, we are unsure that SGC's pop reports are accurate with this card, as there are several examples listed where the pose variation is not listed.
