The 1909 E95 Philadelphia Caramel issue is one of the most popular of the many caramel and candy sets.  Issued by the Camden, NJ-based Philadelphia Caramel company, the set contains 25 players (including most of the day's biggest names), with the set checklist printed in black on the reverse.  Despite the plentiful supply, the cards are immensely popular among prewar collectors, possibly the most widely-collected of all the caramel issues.  As with many caramel issues, the cards are condition-sensitive, subject not only to the overall wear associated with a century of handling, but also to the staining and wear common with candy issues.  Indeed, high-grade examples are seldom found, with just two sets on PSA's Current Finest list completed with a GPA above 5, and two more on SGC's Registry ranking at the same level.

Presented here, then, is one of the most remarkable things we have ever seen: a wonderfully crisp, sharp and clean complete E95 set, appearing as sharp as the day they were issued.  All of the cards have been graded by SGC, with each one graded AUTHENTIC due to having been carefully cut from a sheet.

The cards themselves are extraordinary: not a crease to be found; the Ty Cobb a colorful, well-centered example with bright white borders, the Eddie Plank boasting bright colors and vivid registration.  While a few minor surface blemishes can be found here and there, the majority of these cards appear in the NM to MINT range, mostly well-centered, with rich color and outstanding print registration.  We cannot say enough about these cards; they are simply wonderful.  Without knowledge of the sheet-cut nature of the cards, one might expect technical grades in the 7 to 9 range. An examination of the population reports of both grading companies yields precious few high-grade specimens; it is our opinion that despite the sheet-cut nature of the cards, many of the cards found herein are the most attractive examples one can find, and the set itself is perhaps the finest in existence.

We are unaware of the origin of the sheet or how recently the cards were cut, though the new SGC flips indicate that they were graded within the last year. We are extremely interested in how the hobby will perceive this important and well-preserved collection, a tremendous example of "buy the card, not the holder." It is without question that this is the sharpest and cleanest assemblage of E95 cards we have ever seen; their authenticity is beyond dispute and their beauty is exceptional.  An incredible set, perhaps the finest in existence.  25 cards total.
