Primarily issued in 1910, the Plow Boy Tobacco set features 49 known subjects, issued by the Spaulding & Merrick Company and distributed in exchange for coupons.  The cards are among the rarest of all tobacco issues today, with only around 125 graded examples known.  The cards, all featuring members of the Chicago Cubs or White Sox, feature beautiful player photos set against a white background.  That, coupled with the white card backs, result in significant condition issues.

Hall of Famer Frank Chance won the National League pennant as manager of the 1910 Cubs, with a 104-50 record.  The "Peerless Leader" would win 90 cames twice more in 1911 and 1912, finishing in second and third place, but his disposition and fiery temper eventually began to weigh against him.  He was released in 1912 while in the hospital for brain surgery, after arguing with Cubs owner Charles Webb Murphy over Murphy's penny-pinching ways.

Graded GOOD 2 by PSA, the card exhibits strong eye appeal, with outstanding image quality.  The majority of the condition issues relate primarily to soiling and foxing, with markings on the reverse consistent with scrapbook removal.  While population reports indicate a total of five graded examples (this one, which we submitted ourselves, is the only one of the five to have been graded by PSA), a quick scan of VCP illustrates just two different examples circulating in the hobby, an Authentic example with a large spot of paper loss on the image, and a VG/EX example which sold at auction last year.  An extraordinary card from a very rare issue, one of the key cards to a beautiful and seldom-seen set.
