The key card in one of the hobby's most rare and desirable vintage bakery issues, this is a spectacular card from the very rare D304 General Baking Co. series.  Issued between 1911 and 1914 by the Buffalo, NY company, the issue known today as D304 and commonly called "Butter Krust" cards is one of the more unique issues of its era, due in part to the size of the cards (the cards are slightly larger than the more widely-distributed tobacco issues of the day), and partially due to the striking images of the subjects.

Unlike other baseball issues of the era, which often shared poses or images across multiple sets, the poses and illustrations in the D304 set are only found in this issue.  The D304 issue is also significantly more rare than the popular tobacco sets of this era, with its key cards rarely becoming available for sale in the hobby.  The 25 cards from this issue are a rarity, and we are proud to offer several cards from the set in this auction, highlighted by this, the set's most important and desirable subject.

This is an extremely difficult card to obtain in any condition.  Indeed, despite Cobb being one of the top two or three subjects of prewar card collecting, only five examples collectively have been graded by PSA and SGC.  Compare this, for example, with Cobb's green-background T206 - the most "scarce" of his four T206 appearances - of which there are hundreds of graded examples available.

This specimen, graded PR 1 by PSA, is clearly accurately graded.  It is not, however, the condition, but the scarcity of the card that is important in this instance.  The scarce Butter Krust reverse is highlighted on the card, this card is not readily available in the hobby and simply does not change hands often.  An opportunity to acquire one is an outstanding opportunity.  Universally regarded as one of Cobb's greatest cards and a crown jewel of any collection in any grade, this is a rarely-offered example of one of the hobby's most treasured subjects.
