One of a large collection of beautiful T3 Turkey Reds that we will feature in our winter and spring auctions, this is a stunning Turkey Red of Pittsburgh hurler Howie Camnitz.  The T3s we are offering are stunning and largely fresh to the hobby, many with the original color and gloss that today's collectors are not often fortunate enough to see, virtually untouched by hobby hands.

This Camnitz is a true knockout, an example of how the traditional grading system can hurt the assessment of oversized cards like T3s.  So rich in color, with so much original gloss, it caused us to rethink what a T3 looked like in its original state.  The card's corners are incredibly sharp, with some minor color chipping at the very edges.  The reverse is bold and clear, depicting the 1-76 checklist that added boxing great Jack Johnson.  Unfortunately, however, the card has a very minor corner crease on the reverse, and it can be seen from the front.  That one small flaw is enough to bring the card from a sure EX/MT to VG/EX+ (receiving the extra half grade due to its unbelievable eye appeal).  On a regular-sized baseball card, such a condition-related downgrade is only natural.  But such a flaw becomes nearly invisible on a card this large, and the enormous variances between cards receiving the "VG/EX+ grade" becomes apparent when examining this one.

Despite this, a VG/EX+ grade on a T3 is actually an extraordinarily high grade.  T3s, due to their large size, often fall victim to display-related condition flaws like pinholes, tears, tape and scrapbook stains that make it very difficult to obtain even midgrade examples; more than 31% of all the encapsulated copies have graded GOOD or lesser; fewer than 1% have graded Near Mint or better.  This Camnitz is no different; with a grade of 4.5 it is one of the higher-grade examples, as just one example has graded above a 6.

An absolutely gorgeous T3, a more attractive one for the grade is extremely unlikely.
