The oversized M101-6 cards issued between 1917 and 1920 by publisher Felix Mendelsohn are among the most beautiful photographic cards of their era.  Measuring 4 ½” x 6 ½”, the cards have long been scarce, but demand for the cards has increased exponentially in recent years, likely due to the advent of grading company holders large enough to accommodate the cards.  Though complete sets were advertised in the Sporting News at 100 cards for $5, more than 110 different subjects have now been confirmed, along with several team variations.

Today, Hall of Famers from the issue are in high demand, and we have been fortunate enough to feature a small group of four different examples.  Each presents remarkably well for the assigned grade, with sharp image contrast and clean surfaces marred by flaws that are small but fatal with respect to graded cards.  Small pinholes, writing on the reverse, and minor edge wear account for the technical grades, though we are confident that scarcity and eye appeal will more than compensate.

Strong example of Hall of Fame manager John McGraw in an outstanding pose, at the top of the dugout steps, bat in hand.  The photo is clear enough to see the grain of the wood and the cloth in his socks.  Graded VG 40 by SGC due to some surface wear and edge chipping, one of the finer Mendelsohn Hall of Famers we have seen nonetheless.
