The oversized M101-6 cards issued between 1917 and 1920 by publisher Felix Mendelsohn are among the most beautiful photographic cards of their era.  Measuring 4 ½” x 6 ½”, the cards have long been scarce, but demand for the cards has increased exponentially in recent years, likely due to the advent of grading company holders large enough to accommodate the cards.  Though complete sets were advertised in the Sporting News at 100 cards for $5, more than 110 different subjects have now been confirmed, along with several team variations.

Today, Hall of Famers from the issue are in high demand, and we have been fortunate enough to feature a small group of four different examples.  Each presents remarkably well for the assigned grade, with sharp image contrast and clean surfaces marred by flaws that are small but fatal with respect to graded cards.  Small pinholes, writing on the reverse, and minor edge wear account for the technical grades, though we are confident that scarcity and eye appeal will more than compensate.

Graded POOR 10 due to a pinhole, the image of Hall of Famer Max Carey boasts strong eye appeal and crisp detail (check his belt buckle on the side of his pants).  A stellar image depicting a smiling Carey, posing in the midst of his swing, one of the finer photos of the Pirates outfielder we have seen.  An outstanding example of a scarce card, one of just three Mendelsohn Careys to be graded.
