Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1977, John Henry "Pop" Lloyd is considered the greatest shortstop in Negro Leagues history, and legend has it that no less a player than Babe Ruth considered Lloyd to be the greatest baseball player ever.  During his playing days, Lloyd was nicknamed "The Black Wagner," to which the legendary Honus Wagner responded "It's an honor to be compared to him."  Lloyd posted a lifetime batting average above .337 across 26 seasons, playing well into his 40s with at least 12 teams, and managing four.  Known as a great leader and baseball mind, he became one of the Negro Leagues' greatest managers.  Upon his retirement, he devoted much of his energy to youth baseball, where his efforts continue to be recognized today, particularly in Atlantic City, where he lived upon his retirement.

Distributed in Cuba in 1924 and 25 with Aguilitas Cigarettes, the Aguilitas "Segundas" set contained 900 cards with a wide variety of subjects, including baseball players, movie stars, soccer players, boxers and others.  The 44 players from the Cuban Professional League in the set included several Hall of Famers and Negro League stars, with the issue's key cards being the two different cards of Pop Lloyd, plus one card of Oscar Charleston.  Of the issue's 44 baseball subjects, 28 are enshrined in the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame.

A 1924-25 Aguilitas Segundas "Pop" Lloyd is easily one of the most important Cuban baseball cards ever produced, of one of the most important Negro League players in history.  Of the various Cuban cards of Hall of Famers, few are more desirable than this.  Graded VG 40 by SGC, the quality of the image is particularly strong, with chipping at the bottom edge being the primary culprit accounting for the grade.  Moderate toning to the reverse reveals the card's age, as well as the extreme condition sensitivity of most Cuban cards.  While Cuban cards are difficult to find in general, cards of Hall of Famers that present as well as this are few and far between.  As one of very few "playing days" cards of the Hall of Famer to be produced, this is a very significant, very rare and desirable card, one that does not make itself available for sale very often.
