At some point in his younger years as a collector, Charlie Young began to turn his attention toward maintaining his cards in optimum condition.  We believe that turning point began in 1956.  Young's 1956 Topps set, while still handled and well-loved, was clearly treated more attentively than the Topps sets of prior years.  These cards, carefully filed in their photo album, retained their original gloss and color, and the cards were much cleaner and more fresh than those in prior years.  The cards exhibit far less surface wear, suggesting that they were carefully stored until the sets were completed, and then the cards were filed away in their album.

This is not to say that the cards do not exhibit wear.  Edge wear resulting from the cards touching together edge-to-edge in their album (and bumping against one another as pages turn) is common, and corner wear and dings from inserting the cards in their photo corners is still an issue.  Couple this with the typical Topps quality control issues related to centering, and the set's condition breakdown is approximately 7% EX-MT; 22% EX; 39% VG-EX; 26% VG; and 6% GOOD or lesser.

We elected to submit 12 cards from this set to PSA for grading.  A condition assessment of those cards is as follows: #5 Ted Williams (HOF) PSA EX-MT 6; #10 Warren Spahn (HOF) PSA VG-EX 4; #15 Ernie Banks (HOF) PSA EX 5; #20 Al Kaline (HOF) - PSA VG-EX 4; #30 Jackie Robinson (HOF) PSA VG-EX 4; #31 Hank Aaron (HOF) PSA VG-EX 4; #33 Roberto Clemente (HOF) PSA EX 5; #79 Sandy Koufax (HOF) PSA EX 5; #130 Willie Mays (HOF) PSA EX 5; #135 Mickey Mantle (HOF) PSA EX-MT 6; #150 Duke Snider (HOF) PSA VG-EX 4; #164 Harmon Killebrew (HOF) PSA EX 5 (MK).  Additional keys grade as follows: #61 Skowron VG; #101 Campanella (HOF) VG/EX; #107 Mathews (HOF) VG/EX; #110 Berra (HOF) VG; #120 Ashburn (HOF) EX; #200 Feller (HOF) VG; #240 Ford (HOF) VG; #260 Reese (HOF) VG.

This is a wonderful midgrade set, with key cards grading very well, and outstanding overall eye appeal.  With very little creasing and wear, the set is fresh to the hobby, extremely clean, and contains a number of important postwar stars and Hall of Fame cards.  The VCP value of the 12 graded cards alone approaches $3,000.  An outstanding vintage set, one of the most popular and endearing issues of its era.  340 cards total.
