By 1965, the great Yankee center fielder Mickey Mantle was nearing the end of his career.  While Mantle received his share of boos during his lifetime, by this time he was considered a Yankee hero, and the team elected to honor him with a "Mickey Mantle Day" late in the 1965 season.  Mantle was just the fifth Yankee so honored (the others being Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio and Yogi Berra), and on September 18, Mantle's 2,000th game, the Commerce Comet gave a speech in front of a capacity crowd at Yankee Stadium, which rewarded him with a standing ovation.  When the game began and Mantle stepped up to the plate amidst yet another ovation, Tigers pitcher Joe Sparma walked to the plate, shook Mantle's hand, and then returned to the mound to resume the game, which the Yankees lost, 4-3 in extra innings.

Presented are a ticket stub from that game, as well as the commemorative handout received by fans at the game.  The ticket stub exhibits some wear, including a crease that traverses the front of the ticket as well as the telltale waviness that results from spending a baseball game in someone's pocket.  The corners have been lightly rounded, and the stub has been subjected to other age-related wear, but is overall in VG condition with beautiful display qualities.  The handout itself is in excellent condition, with very minor surface wear and slight wear and toning to the edges and corners.  The lower-right corner of the piece has the tiniest clip, perhaps a millimeter, if that.

An excellent memento of one of the most memorable days in Yankee Stadium history.
