Among the more incredible hobby-related sights we have witnessed was undoubtedly the enormous collection of cards and memorabilia that we encountered in San Antonio this spring. The baby of longtime collector Charlie Young who passed away in 2007 the collection was begun during his childhood in the late 1940s and diligently assembled year after year until his unfortunate passing. During the early part of his collecting Young carefully and diligently assembled his complete sets into photo albums using black "photo corners" to house the cards. The corners often protected the cards particularly in later years when Young was clearly attentive to the condition of the cards; many of the late 50s/early 60s cards we have encountered have been virtually mint save for the typical Topps print defects of the era. One thing we discovered as we carefully removed the cards from their albums to evaluate for grading: with the exception of the 1952 Topps set the condition of the cards were remarkably consistent within the set. For instance the 1962 Topps cards were virtually all beautiful with four sharp corners and incredible gloss - the only flaws not related to Topps' own print defects were very minor corner chipping and the occasional corner dings from installing the cards in their photo corners. Similarly the 1969 Topps cards were more worn and occasionally exhibited dings to the same corner card after card for fifty or more consecutive cards - as if a small brick of cards had been dropped on one corner. This consistency within the sets made it easy for us to answer the one question posed to us most often by collectors when discussing this collection: "Are you going to offer any of the sets in their original photo albums?" The answer is YES! And this is it! Upon reviewing the 1953 Topps set we could detect what we felt was probably above average wear to the corners and edges of each card. Careful removal of the Jackie Robinson Luke Easter and Roy Campanella cards confirmed that fact: the card would likely have graded VG or perhaps even lesser. As such we feel that the set is best represented as a document of a longtime collector's passion and we will be offering it complete in its original photo album. It is our hope that the winning bidder will elect to keep the set exactly as it is the way Charlie Young assembled it back in the 1950s. The cards themselves look fantastic housed in their photo
