Exceptional Weeks & Melville brand official scorecard, dated to August 27, 1883, between the St. Louis Browns and New York Metropolitans, played at the Polo Grounds.  The Metropolitans' lineup featured future Hall of Famer Tim Keefe (misspelled "Keife" in the scorecard), who would win 41 games, starting 68 of his team's 97 games, pitching 619 innings.  The Browns' lineup featured future Hall of Famer Charles Comiskey, along with third baseman Arlie Latham.  The Browns won the game, 8-3, behind the pitching of Jumbo McGinnis.

The date of August 27, 1883 is historically significant for non-baseball reasons: it is the date of the eruption of Krakatoa in the Dutch East Indies, a devastating eruption that destroyed more than 70% of the island and killed more than 36,000 between the eruption itself and its ensuing tsunamis.  The third of the four volcanic explosions was heard more than 3,000 miles away, rupturing the eardrums of sailors 40 miles away, and is estimated to be the loudest sound in human history.

The scorecard is obviously well-worn, exhibiting wear consistent with its intended use in the form of writing (both ink and pencil), overall soiling and a few miscellaneous spots of paper loss.  The piece remains intact, however, displaying well and leaving no questions about the date of the game (the date is actually printed on the cover, the lineups printed inside).  The demand for 19th Century baseball scorecards is on the rise, as their scarcity has long been underappreciated.  A strong example, an outstanding document of the game's earliest days.
