Our Spring, 2017 auction clearly illustrated the rise in popularity of early Exhibit cards in general, with card after card setting record prices within the grade.  Long underappreciated, the beautiful photography, clean images, and outstanding player selection of early Exhibit sets have captured the attention of hobbyists, with none card generating more interest than the 1925 card of Yankee Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig.

Once obtainable for a few thousand dollars, the last several years have seen unbelievable price appreciation, with low-grade examples routinely breaking the five-figure mark, a PSA VG 3 example reaching $60,000 this past winter, and a qualified PSA 6 breaking $100,000 earlier this year.

The growth is with good reason: Lou Gehrig is one of the most popular players ever to play, and certainly is one of the greatest of all-time.  His legend has only increased with the years, and values of Gehrig memorabilia has begun to take its rightful place among the most valuable of all baseball collectibles.  It was, after all, just two years ago that a Gehrig game-used bat attracted considerable attention in the media, ultimately selling for the record price of $437,000 in a Love of the Game Auction.  The demand for quality Gehrig-related material continues to rise dramatically as hobbyists continue to seek out the finest material from the game's all-time greats.

Presented is the highest-graded 1925 Exhibit Lou Gehrig rookie card to be offered at public auction in five years.  This example, graded EX 60 by SGC, is one of the finest-known specimens; indeed just four have achieved a higher numerical grade of only 49 examples to have been graded by PSA and SGC combined.  The card is stunning, with square corners and very little edge wear; a bottom-right corner ding being the only visible edge or corner flaw.  Surface wear is minor for the issue; some mild, age-related toning is visible on the card, notably around the edges, but none so obtrusive as to interfere with the tremendous image of Gehrig.

This is an extremely rare and valuable card, one of the most desirable and important cards in the hobby.  In nearly 40 years of regularly issuing baseball cards, with well over 1,500 different cards checklisted, the 1925 Lou Gehrig is the most valuable Exhibit baseball card, and this particular example is one of just five to attain a grade of EX, with only four higher.  One of the finest known specimens of what is likely the most important of all the Exhibit baseball cards.

It should be noted that this card is being offered with a modest reserve, less than half what historical pricing would suggest the card is worth.  As is our policy, we will disclose the amount of the reserve 7 days before the auction close.
