Wonderful example of a fresh 1959 Topps baseball set, from the original owner collection we obtained in San Antonio earlier this year.  Like the others, these cards were carefully stored away in a leatherette photo album, secured to their pages with "photo corners." Careful removal of the photo corners from their pages revealed a fantastic set, with many cards likely to obtain grades near the higher end of the scale, but all the cards boasting exceptional eye appeal.  Very few of the cards exhibit outward and obvious elements of wear; the primary condition flaws with these cards lie with the printing process - centering, print snow, roller lines and the like, as was typical with Topps cards from the era.  The majority of post-production condition flaws lie in the corners; even the most careful insertion of the cards into their photo corners sometimes yielded corner dings or even flipped corners, in some cases.  Further, on pages where the cards were secured too close together, careless page turning could sometimes cause some cards to rub together at their edges, causing slight edge wear in some cases.

Still, we elected to submit 131 well-centered, clean examples to PSA for grading.  Of those, the results were as follows: PSA NM-MT 8: 17 cards (13%); PSA NM+ 7.5: 1 card; PSA NM 7: 21 cards (17%); PSA EX-MT 6: 49 cards (37%); PSA EX 5: 35 cards (27%); PSA VG-EX 4 or lesser: 8 cards (7%).  Key cards from within this group graded as follows: #10 Mickey Mantle (HOF): PSA VG 3; #50 Willie Mays (HOF) - PSA EX-MT 6; #180 Yogi Berra (HOF) - PSA NM 7; #380 Hank Aaron (HOF) - PSA VG-EX 4; #390 Orlando Cepeda (HOF) - PSA EX-MT 6; #435 Frank Robinson (HOF) - PSA EX 5; #478 Roberto Clemente (HOF) - PSA EX-MT 6; #564 Mickey Mantle AS - PSA EX-MT 6.

The cards that we elected not to submit for grading would achieve technical grades somewhat less than those we submitted (in other words, we submitted the best-centered examples with the best corners, and got the best grades from this group).  A more accurate reflection of the entire set would be closer to 6% NM-MT; 9% NM; 20% EX-MT; 27% EX; 23% VG-EX; and 15% lesser.  Still, an outstanding original owner set, with print defects typical of the issue being the cards' primary flaws.  An attractive, well-preserved original owner set.  572 cards total.
