While the 1933 Goudey issue set the standard for quality in the gum card era, the underrated 1934 set raised the bar, maintaining the company's high production quality while adding design elements that continue to be borrowed by card manufacturers even today.  Foreground and background images, baseball quiz questions on the reverse, even player endorsements are all innovations we take for granted, which were popularized by the Goudey Gum company in 1934.  Despite the lack of a Babe Ruth in the set, the player selection is outstanding, with two Lou Gehrigs that are widely considered his most beautiful and desirable cards.

Presented is an incredibly clean, colorful and consistent set, largely a crease-free set that exhibits very little wear despite technical grades toward the middle of the scale.  This is the finest midgrade set we have handled, the majority of the cards presenting more strongly than the assigned grade.  Despite the middle technical grade, the set is strong enough to rank #29 on PSA's Set Registry, one of just 18 complete sets registered.  With very few cards exhibiting lower technical grades, the set is just a few minor upgrades from achieving Top 20 status, as the majority of the set's cards rate at the VG/EX level and higher.

A complete breakdown of the set by grade is as follows:  PSA EX-MT+ 6.5 (1 card): #64; PSA EX-MT 6 (7 cards): #21 Terry (HOF)#23 Gehringer (HOF), #30, #43, #51, #62 Greenberg (HOF), #67; PSA EX-MT 6 (Q) (1 card): #46; PSA EX+ 5.5 (5 cards): #14, #25, #35 Lombardi (HOF)#37 Gehrig (HOF), #48; PSA EX 5 (12 cards): #28, #33, #39, #41, #45, #53, #56, #57, #59, #60, #66, #72; PSA VG-EX+ 4.5 (6 cards): #4, #11 Waner (HOF)#22 Vaughan (HOF), #61 Gehrig (HOF), #82, #83; PSA VG-EX 4 (18 cards): #7 Durocher (HOF), #20, #24, #26, #27 Appling (HOF), #31, #38, #40, #44, #54, #58, #63, #77, #87, #88, #91, #94, #95; PSA VG-EX 4 (Q) (1 card): #75; PSA VG+ 3.5 (3 cards): #65, #68, #89; PSA VG 3 (24 cards): #3, #8, #9, #13 Frisch (HOF), #15, #16, #17, #18 Manush (HOF)#19 Grove (HOF), #29, #34 Hafey (HOF), #36, #42, #47, #50, #52, #55, #70, #71, #79, #81, #86, #93, #96; PSA VG 3 (Q) (1 card): #12 Hubbell (HOF); PSA GOOD+ 2.5 (3 cards): #1 Foxx (HOF)#10 Klein (HOF), #49; PSA GOOD 2 (8 cards): #2 Cochrane (HOF)#6 Dean (HOF), #69, #73, #74, #76, #84, #92; PSA FR 1.5 (3 cards): #5, #32, #85; PSA PR 1 (3 cards): #78, #80, #90 Cuyler (HOF).

This is truly a beautiful set.  To illustrate how beautiful, we have taken the liberty of posting scans of every card on our website listing for this lot.  Even the majority of the collector-grade cards boast square corners and bright, clean colors.  Unlike many gum era sets where the less affordable superstar cards grade lower than the commons, the key cards in this set are quite attractive, particularly the two Gehrigs and Greenberg card.  Even the lower grade Cochrane and Dean cards appear far stronger than the assigned grade.  A wonderful, highly desirable set from the height of the gum card era, graded entirely by PSA, one of just 18 complete sets on that company's Registry.  96 cards total.

PLEASE NOTE: After reviewing our original scans of this lot, we have elected to re-scan the entire set, as the original set of scans did not reflect the vibrant color of the cards.  We re-scanned the set on March 10 and uploaded new scans, far more representative of the beautiful cards in this set.
