Distributed in the years around 1919, these oversized (4 3/8” x 6 3/8”) photographic premiums were produced by Chicago-area printer Felix Mendelsohn and sold in advertisements in The Sporting News as 100-card sets for $5.  Since the issue was produced over a number of years, more than 100 subjects are known, and several had their team affiliations change as they were traded during the set’s production run.

Today, the cards are reasonably scarce; it is uncommon to find any cards from the issue at auction.  On our recent trip through the South, we received a collection of more than 30 cards from the set including the ultra-valuable Babe Ruth (which is located in the “Featured Items” section of this auction).  Each graded by SGC, the collection includes 10 other Hall of Famers, the largest grouping of cards from this issue that we have seen at auction.

Outstanding card of Bill Doak, the player largely credited with inventing the webbing inside a baseball glove.  The card is graded FAIR 20 by SGC due to what appears to be a large pinhole at the top center of the card.  Otherwise, a beautiful midgrade card with a stunning photo.
