Reading through my first-ever issue of the Beckett Price Guide in the early 1980s (LOTG owner Al Crisafulli is writing this entry alone), the East Hills Pirates set was fascinating due to its size, the player selection, and what I perceived as the pure impossibility of obtaining them.  When a common example (I forget the player, forgive me) surfaced in my local card shop, I purchased it enthusiastically, despite it being in awful condition.  It was the pride and joy of my collection for quite some time, and the subject of trade requests constantly.

The invention of the internet certainly shrunk the world, and it became evident that the 1966 East Hills Pirates set was not at all difficult to obtain - the price the set sells for today is not much greater than what it sold for in the 1980s, as the preponderance of truly scarce regional and oddball issues from the 1950s and 60s captured the imaginations of collectors much more than the East Hills Pirates set ever did.

Still, whenever I see one, I get that same magical feeling I did when I was a kid.  Particularly the Clemente, which was obviously the most wonderful card in the set - the greatest player in what was an impossible-to-find card issue.

This particular example has been graded NM-MT 8 by PSA, the extraordinary high grade making up for the plentiful nature of the cards themselves.  A fascinating and colorful card from the first regional set to capture my imagination as a child.
