Though our spellcheck kindly autocorrected "Weissmen" to "Watchmen" for our printed catalog, the name of the team represented in this collection of cabinet photos was the New Haven "Weissmen," named after Hall of Famer George Weiss.

At the conclusion of his major league career, Chief Bender enjoyed a successful run as a minor league pitcher and manager.  That run included two years in New Haven, Connecticut, as a member of the New Haven Weissmen of the Eastern League.  Bender is featured in this series of three cabinet-style photos, each taken in an empty ballpark, with the players identified underneath each photo.

The first photo depicts the Bender ("Manager Charles Albert") standing alongside "Cap't Neal," second baseman and former big leaguer Neal Ball.  The humorous caption "The Board of Strategy" also appears on the photo. The second photo, labeled "The Catching Staff," depicts catchers John Nagle and Henry Sullivan.  The last, labeled "The Outer Gardeners," depicts outfielders Earl Stimpson, Beauty McGowan (who enjoyed a few seasons with the St. Louis Browns in 1928 and 29), and a player labeled "Georgie," who we believe may actually be the outfielder Dizzy Nutter, who managed 18 games with Boston in 1919.

Each of the photos present well, with typical age-related wear and toning, some mild foxing, and some wear and abrasions on the "Outer Gardeners" photo.  Still, a wonderful document of the second half of Hall of Famer Bender's career (Bender did go 25-12 with a 1.94 ERA with the 1920 Weissmen).
