Few figures in New York Yankees history are more beloved than Thurman Munson.  The hard-nosed backstop presided over the team's rise back into contention after some dark years in the late 1960s and early 1970s, his aggressive play, clutch hitting, and tendency to play through injuries won over the hearts of fans.  His tragic death in a 1979 plane crash - a result of learning to fly so he could visit his family more frequently during the season - was a terrible day for baseball fans of a certain "vintage" that still remember the day as if it was yesterday.  Munson's Yankee Stadium clubhouse locker remained undisturbed until the stadium was torn down; it now sits on display at the new Yankee Stadium, a monument to hard work, and a tribute to the great Yankees catcher, cut down before he could end his career on his own terms.

Some years ago, items from Munson's personal collection and estate were consigned to auction, and eager collectors lined up to purchase mementoes from his outstanding career. Among those artifacts was this wonderful piece: Munson's lifetime pass, gaining him free admission to all Major League ballparks.

Awarded to players after the conclusion of eight years in uniform, the lifetime pass is a badge of honor among players.  Munson would have received this pass in 1977 or 1978 (depending on how the league calculates years of service), the gold pass bearing the facsimile signatures of Lee MacPhail and Chuck Feeney.  Sadly, Munson did not benefit from the pass, as he was still an active player when he was killed, and thus was unable to enjoy the lifetime of free baseball that it promised.  As such, the pass stands as a monument to what could've been, a perk given to a player "in appreciation of long and meritorious service."  Sadly, the service was not nearly long enough.

The pass is in Excellent condition, with little signs of use or wear.  It is accompanied by a stunning original photo of the Yankees captain by photographer Michael Grossbardt, Yankees team photographer.  Grossbart has signed the lovely 5" x 7" photo in black fiber-tip marker, an outstanding compliment to an extremely rare and desirable piece - the lifetime pass earned by Yankees great Thurman Munson.
