Absolutely spectacular panoramic photo picturing the 1917 Detroit Tigers, posed outside the Bevo plant in 1917.  Bevo was an Anheuser-Busch company that began brewing non-alcoholic beer in 1916, and had its greatest success during Prohibition, for obvious reasons.  The photo is dated May 4, 1917, just two days after the team played a game against the St. Louis Browns in St. Louis (where the Bevo plant was located).  Perfect place for a team outing!

The photo measures 38" x 8", with wide, white borders on all four sides.  Team members are in their street clothes, all looking dapper.  Some interesting handwritten notations appear under some of the subjects, some of which identify the subjects themselves, including (L-R) "Trainer", Art (actually Archie) Yelley, John Couch (with the notation "Great during season, then went into army"), Ty Cobb, "Newspaper Man," "Burns," Sam Crawford (with the notation "great outfielder"), Howard Ehmke, Harry Heilmann, "3 catcher" (perhaps Tubby Spencer), Oscar Vitt, "Ducky" Jones, Hughie Jennings, Ty Cobb again! and "newspaper man" again!

Indeed, both Cobb and the unidentified  Newspaper Man engaged in the time-honored practice of running behind the cameraman as the photo was being taken, and appearing at the end of the line so that they actually appeared in the photo twice.  It is interesting to see Ty Cobb, with his hard-nosed reputation, engaging in such chicanery!  Photo credit is given to La Mertha photo of St. Louis.

The photo itself displays strong, but has, over the years, been roiled into a tight cylinder.  Professional matting and framing is recommended.  Edges and corners exhibit wear, with some very tiny edge tears and light creases from age, though the overall presentation is strong.  Based on the size of the photo and the handwritten notations, it seems likely that the photo was the property of one of the players at some point.  An outstanding piece.
