Exceptional 1987 Milwaukee Brewers home jersey attributed to Hall of Fame shortstop Robin Yount, in the prime of his career.  In 1987, Yount Yount batted .312 with 21 home runs and 103 RBI.  The jersey is a Rawlings size 40 extended length jersey, with the tagging in the center of the tail.  The jersey was a part of the collection of former Baltimore Orioles broadcaster Ted Patterson, who amassed an extensive uniform collection, most of which was given to him directly by players or opposing team's equipment managers.  This jersey has been assigned a grade of A10 by MEARS, taking into consideration the size, tagging, and previous examplars.

However, we will note in the interest of transparency that this jersey was also evaluated by another expert in game-worn equipment, who found it problematic in two areas.  The first area is that the jersey is an "extra length" jersey, tagged as size 40.  The authenticator felt that the jersey measured larger than the tagged size, and that this was the only exemplar that they had seen from Yount which was an extra length jersey.  Secondly, the expert felt that other exemplars from this year had the tagging on the interior sides of the jersey, yet this example is tagged in the interior center.

It is our opinion that the jersey is authentic.  There are several pieces in Ted Patterson's collection where, over the years, he has explained the stories of how the jerseys were acquired, and in this case, Ted claimed to have obtained the jersey directly from Yount.  In other cases, authentication proved the jerseys to exactly match the stories Ted related to us - good or bad, authentic or inauthentic.  Ted Patterson has not been one to try and pull the wool over our eyes; he has pointed out areas of restoration in display pieces, notated pro-model bats that were not game-used, and advised us of jerseys that he knew to be inauthentic.  But when he obtained a piece directly from a player, he discussed it with pride, and often had other evidence to support his claim - such as audiotapes of his interview with the player on the date he received the piece, photographs, personalized notes, or simply stories.

Despite the MEARS assessment, with which we agree, we do, however, feel obligated to pass on the opinion of the second expert, so that bidders can bid with caution, and be aware that we do not guarantee that different authenticators will agree with one another on an assessment.
