Presented is a very scarce, mid grade complete set of R312 "Pastels," called such due to the pastel coloration of the cards.  These absolutely beautiful premiums are actually black and white photos that were colorized.  Printed on thin, oversized (5 3/8" x 4") stock, the set is loaded with stars and Hall of Famers, containing what many feel to be the true rookie card of Joe DiMaggio.  These striking and whimsical cards feature players in a multitude of circumstances: posed for the camera, in action, or hamming it up with others - the result is a memorable glimpse at the lighter side of baseball in its golden days.

Grading 34% EX or better, 34% VG/EX, 18% VG, and 10% GOOD or lesser, this set was hand-assembled, card-by-card, by a dedicated collector with a diligent approach to acquiring cards with exceptional eye appeal.  Indeed, as we were preparing the auction listing, the collector was still searching for the final card to complete the set; it arrived as we were preparing the auction listing.  Like the others, the card was an attractive, midgrade example.  We quickly submitted the card to SGC for grading, to round out a complete, graded set.

While complete and graded, it is a mixed set of PSA and SGC cards, with one card ungraded.  A complete breakdown of the cards is as follows:

One PSA EX-MT 6: #30 Walker/Haas/Kreevich.  Fourteen PSA EX 5: #7 Bordagary/Earnshaw, #9 Camilli, #16 Crowder, #21 Dressen, #26 Galan/Traynor (HOF), #27 Gomez (HOF)/Hoag, #31 Harder, #32 Hartnett Crossing (HOF), #34 Hornsby (HOF), #39 Mize (HOF), #41 Parmelee, #44 Schott, #47 Swift, #50 Winegarner.  Two SGC EX 60: #25 Frey, #28 Greenberg (HOF).  One PSA VG/EX+ 4.5: #46 Sullivan.  One SGC VG/EX+ 55: #11 Cavaretta/Hack/Herman (HOF)/Jurges.  Nine PSA VG/EX 4: #3 Bejma/Hemsley, #8 Brown, #10 Cubs, #12 Cochrane (HOF), #13 Collins/Hack, #33 Harnett/Warnecke, #35 Hornsby (HOF)/Sothoren, #36 Lombardi (HOF), #45 Stengel (HOF). Seven SGC VG/EX 50: #15 Cronin (HOF)/Harris, #19 Dickey (HOF), #20 DiMaggio (HOF), #23 Fox/Goslin (HOF)/White, #29 Grove (HOF)/Mack (HOF), #38 Martin, #43 Ruffing.  One PSA VG/EX 4 (MK): Altrock.  One VG-VG/EX (ungraded): Ferrell/Van Atta. Five PSA VG 3: #14 Collins, #17 Cuyler (HOF), #18 Cuyler (HOF)/Speaker (HOF)/Taylor,  #40 Mungo, #42 Rowe. One PSA GOOD+ 2.5: #49 Waners (HOF)/Weaver.  Three PSA GOOD 2: #5 Blanton, #6 Bolton/Whitehill, #37 Lopez (HOF).  One PSA F/P 1: #1 Allen.

This is an outstanding midgrade set, loaded with Hall of Famers.  Due to the oversize nature of the cards in this set, the flimsy stock on which they were printed, and how the cards were distributed, it is very difficult to obtain even a midgrade complete set of R312 pastels.  A set such as this, with outstanding eye appeal for the majority of the cards, is an infrequent occurrence in the hobby.  A beautiful set.
