The T3 Turkey Red cabinet issue is one of the most condition-sensitive mainstream prewar sets in the hobby.  The cards' large (5 3/4" x 8") size lent themselves well to being displayed on youngsters' walls, leaving many with telltale pinholes and tack holes, tape remnants and back damage.  Being oversized also made storage difficult, leading to severe corner dings and edge chipping.  Additionally, many examples simply contain writing on the reverse.  Mostly, though, the oversized nature of the cards make even the smallest flaws more pronounced; small surface wrinkles and corner touches that would barely be visible on smaller cards are glaring imperfections on cards this big.  As a result, very few high-grade T3s exist.  Just a fraction of 1% of all the T3 Turkey Red cards graded have attained a level of Near Mint or better.

This is one of them.  Phillies catcher Red Dooin's Turkey Red cabinet has been assigned the lofty grade of NM 84 by SGC, one of just three Turkey Reds of any player that company has ever graded at this level.  Indeed, SGC is approaching 2,000 graded T3s and only one card - also a Dooin, with the Turkey Red back - has ever graded higher.

In fact, no Dooin with a checklist back has ever graded higher than EX-MT from any grading company until this example came along, submitted to SGC for review from a large collection of T3s we are featuring in this auction.  The card is gorgeous, with a gloss and boldness that is difficult to describe.  Corners are sharp and the surface is virtually flawless, just a minor tilt and corner touches reducing the card's grade from a potentially higher level.  The card reverse features the 1-76 checklist.

The opportunity to acquire such a high-grade example from this set is extraordinarily rare, and while the card meets all the attributes of the technical grade, it is the quality of the image and surface that helps this particular T3 stand out against so many others.
