Three-page handwritten letter, circa 1910, from Hall of Fame pitcher Walter Johnson to Cincinnati promoter D.A. Fletcher, regarding a postseason barnstorming series between major league stars.  Fletcher had offered between $500 and $1000 to Major League players to appear in postseason barndstorming exhibition games.  The precursor to the Baseball Commissioner, the National Commission, objected to the exhibitions on the grounds that they would diminish interest in the World Series.  More likely, they were interested in finding a way to make money on a similar venture.

In the letter, Johnson expresses his desire to play, as well as his opinion that the National Commission is going too far by restricting the players' ability to participate in the games.  "We have consent from all our managers and owners of the clubs so why should they but in and stop us.  They just want to run everything that comes up," Johnson writes, "I think after we have played all summer under them they should mind their own business and if our owners are willing let us go and play."

The letter itself is written on the letterhead of the Hotel Richmond in Washington, DC, and though undated, likely was written late in the 1910 season.  Johnson's name is signed fully in blue ink at the bottom of the letter.  The letter is well-preserved, some staple holes at the top center and some discoloration related to age along the edges.  Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
