Since our sale of a Lou Gehrig game-used, photo-matched Hanna Batrite bat earlier in 2015, the number of collectors who have approached us with Hanna bats has been phenomenal.  Since we love the brand and are partial not only to the logo of these bats but to their construction and finish, we enjoy reviewing them.  It is very difficult, however, to establish a Hanna bat as a pro model bat, due, unfortunately, to the lack of player ordering records from Hanna.

There are, typically, some telltale signs of use, however.  The most obvious, and a surefire indicator of being a pro model bat, is the weight being stamped into the knob.  Such is the case with this Tris Speaker model 14, which has the weight of 36 oz stamped directly into the knob.  Additionally, the bat exhibits ball marks and ink transfers on all sides of the barrel.  Lastly, the bat matches those bats ordered from Hillerich & Bradsby by Speaker between 1926 and 1928.

It is the weight stamped into the knob, however, that solidifies this as a pro-model bat.  Of all the Hanna bats reviewed by PSA/DNA, just four have exhibited this characteristic (three of the four have been offered for sale by Love of the Game).  After a careful review of the bat's characteristics, John Taube of PSA/DNA has issued a full LOA with a grade of GU 6.

The bat does exhibit what Taube descibes as "substantial post-player use."  While the bat is solid and the classic Hanna Tempered Ash solid and attractive, it does exhibit several notable condition flaws.  A large handle crack has been repaired with black tape that runs the length of the handle.  The crack does extend past the tape, and it appears that an attempt was made to repair the crack with a small nail, which is typical for the era.  Our assumption is that there may be additional nails underneath the tape.

Further, a hole has been drilled into the bat, possibly for display purposes.  Lastly (and most importantly), the bat has been weighted with a screw, which was driven directly into the centerbrand and bolted into the reverse of the bat.

Tris Speaker is one of the game's greatest-ever hitters, and his bats are very difficult to find.  A clean example of a Speaker pro-model bat, this example can be left as-is and will still display extremely well - however, a professional restoration job could make a substantial aesthetic improvement to an already lovely bat.
