One of the greatest and most desirable cards in the entire hobby, the 1933 Goudey #106 Nap Lajoie is the result of one of the Goudey Gum Company's many marketing gimmicks.  Their wildly popular card set of 1933 was issued without a card #106, meaning that regardless of how many packs were purchased by youngsters looking to complete their set, it was an impossible task.  Kids purchased pack after pack of Goudey gum, looking for that elusive card #106 to complete their sets, to no avail.

A small number of hardcore collectors were undaunted, eventually writing the manufacturer to complain.  To appease those collectors, Goudey in 1934 produced a special card of Hall of Famer Nap Lajoie, fulfilling their requests for a card #106 to complete their 1933 sets. The Lajoie was only distributed in this fashion, resulting in extraordinary scarcity in relation to its counterparts.  Today, the card is considered one of the hobby's most important, valuable, and highly sought-after cards, with an intense demand that will likely always exceed the supply.  The value of the card continues to skyrocket, a recent NM-MT example reaching close to $120,000 at auction.

Presented here is one of the finest examples we have encountered, currently graded EX-MT 6 by PSA.  The card is exceptionally clean, though it exhibits visible but even toning throughout.  Centering is typical for the card, slightly off both top to bottom and left to right.  The corners are sharp, NM corners.

This example was initially offered for sale by a major auction house in the fall of 2011 as an SGC NM 84 example.  The card remained in its NM holder for several years, before our consignor crossed it to PSA, who assigned the card the grade of EX 6.  Our consignor was happy to accept the numerical downgrade at the time, as he is a "buy the card, not the holder" collector who was thrilled to own such a beautiful card but wanted it to display consistently with the rest of his Goudey collection.  Upon receiving the card on consignment, we resubmitted it to SGC, who this time sadly felt the card was no longer worthy of the NM grade it was initially assigned.  The card itself, however, remains the same card, once graded a full grade higher than it appears today.

This is an extraordinary card, clean and evenly toned with a bold and beautiful image and a remarkable lack of overall wear.  At one point it was considered sharp enough that one of the hobby's premier grading companies saw fit to assign it a NM grade, and while grading standards many change from time to time, this card certainly remains the same card as when it was initially submitted.  A spectacular example of what is often considered one of the three or four most significant cards in collecting, this is one of the very finest examples of one of the hobby's most desirable cards.
