The N43 Allen & Ginter issue of 1888 is among the most beautiful of all 19th Century lithographic cards. This example, depicting Hall of Fame catcher Buck Ewing, is easily the most desirable card of the set, a colorful, oversized card from an issue that featured baseball players, boxers, and other athletes. SGC has assigned what at first glance seems a very conservative grade of VG 3 to the card, which boasts the eye appeal of an example one or even more grades higher on the scale. It takes close inspection to find the fault that results in the downgrade - a surface abrasion resulting in a small spot of paper loss in the white area under Ewing's left arm. Despite the flaw, an outstanding example of an important 19th Century piece.
