Issued on the backs of Post Grape Nuts cereal in 1960, this oversized issue measures 7" x 8 3/4" and numbers nine cards in total, including five baseball players, two football and two basketball.  High grade examples are rare, due to the cards' size, methods of distribution, and propensity for pinholes, tape marks, and various stains.  In fact, while the issue is scarce and graded examples even more so, rarely is a card from the set found in a grade higher than VG.  The full-color photographic cards are surrounded by a faux woodgrain border, each giving the appearance of a framed photo.  Scholars of the issue have thoroughly examined codes printed on the boxes of Post Cereal and discovered that the boxes containing the cards were produced in January and February of 1960, so the cards had likely vanished from grocery stores early in the year.  As a result, the cards are scarce and desirable today.

In 2018, a variation involving the Frank Gifford card was discovered.  The two variations were a result of the box sizes on which the cards appeared.  The 12-ounce packages featured one of six players (Drysdale, Gifford, Kaline, Mantle, Mathews and Unitas), and the larger 16-ounce package featured one of four players (Cousy, Gifford, Killebrew and Pettit).  The two printings of Gifford resulted in a slight variation in the placement of the facsimile signature, as well as the cropping of the image at Gifford's left arm.  As a result, a master set of 1960 Post cards includes two different examples of Frank Gifford.

Presented here is exactly that - a complete master set of 1960 Post Cereal cards, featuring both examples of the tough Frank Gifford variation.  Seldom offered as a complete, nine-card set, this auction is the only instance we can find where all ten cards were offered.  The set features the following: Bob Cousy (VG condition save for a small, pencil "X" in the lower-left border and light staining on the reverse), Don Drysdale (FAIR, with visible surface wear and mild staining on the reverse) Frank Gifford #1 (EX), Frank Gifford #2 (VG appearance despite a pinhole at the top center, light wear to the corners and edges otherwise, heavier staining visible on the reverse, including what appears to be two clear tape stains), Al Kaline (VG/EX appearance, save for a light area of chipping at the top edge, areas of staining on the edges at the reverse), Harmon Killebrew (VG/EX); Mickey Mantle (EX with some very light surface wear, one of the finer examples we have encountered), Eddie Mathews (EX appearance, but light ink underlining "Milwaukee Braves," along with light wear and ink markings on the reverse), Bob Pettit (VG, areas of light surface wear), John Unitas (EX appearance, areas of wear and tape removal on the reverse).  A tremendous complete set, rarely offered at auction, including a newly-discovered variation.  Ten cards total.
