Between 1982 and 1985, Cracker Jack sponsored an "Old Timer's Classic," which was played at RFK Stadium in Washington DC.  The brainchild of Atlanta Braves VP Dick Cecil, the premise was to stage an authentic five-inning game that pitted old-timers against one another, a more competitive game than the Old Timers exhibitions put on by many teams.  The games were televised on ESPN, and each player received $1,000 plus travel expenses for participating.  The games got off to an auspicious start in 1982, when 75-year-old Luke Appling connected off Warren Spahn for a headline-making, 275-foot home run over the fence in left field. Sadly, the games did not have the support of Major League Baseball, and so instead of using individual team logos and uniforms, the organizers designed special American and National League uniforms for the players to wear.

Presented here is the uniform jersey worn by Hall of Famer Al Kaline in one of the games.  The jersey is in outstanding shape, a while pullover Rawlings size 44, signed by Kaline in the tail.  Ted Patterson collected numerous jerseys from Hall of Famers who played in these games; his proximity to Washington likely helped gain him admittance to the games and access to the clubhouses.  Graded A10 by MEARS, an outstanding document of a fun Old Timer's event that we'd love to see re-instituted.
