A beautiful, Type 1 photograph of the Baltimore Orioles featuring future Hall of Fame pitcher Lefty Grove (back row, second from right).  What appears to be a silver gelatin photo, framed in its original frame (but rebacked by our consignor, to secure the photo properly), depicts the Orioles team posed on the field, in front of the grandstands.  

The 1922 Baltimore Orioles won the championship of the International League, led by a strong pitching staff and the offensive prowess of first baseman Jack Bentley and shortstop Joe Boley.  The team's 115-52 record was enough for them to finish 10 games ahead of Rochester.  Many of the players went on to play in the major leagues.  The players pictured in the photo are as follows: BACK ROW, L-R: Harry Fisher, Jack Ogden, Jimmy Walsh, unknown, Ed Weidner (trainer); Mr. Gordon, Jack Bentley, Lefty Grove, Rube Parnham.  MIDDLE ROW, L-R: Wickey McAvoy, Dick Porter, unknown, unknown, Jack Dunn (Manager), Max Bishop, Tommy Thomas, Joe Boley.  FRONT ROW, L-R: Merwin Jacobson, Otis Lawry, Fritz Maisel, Lena Styles.

The photo, framed in its original frame to an approximate size of 13 1/2" x 11", appears to be in outstanding condition, though we cannot observe the edges and corners due to the presence of the A beautiful, Type 1 photograph of the Baltimore Orioles featuring future Hall of Fame pitcher Lefty Grove (back row, second from right).  What appears to be a silver gelatin photo, framed in its original frame (but rebacked by our consignor, to secure the photo properly), depicts the Orioles team posed on the field, in front of the grandstands.  

This piece is an outstanding document of what today is considered one of the greatest minor league teams ever, along with a "pre-rookie" photograph of one of the game's great pitchers.  A scarce photograph of a very important team.frame.  The consignor elected to retain the original frame but replace the paper backing.  However, the consignor also retained a piece of the original backing that identified the original framer (John Wanamaker of Philadelphia), and affixed that backing to the new one.

This piece is an outstanding document of what today is considered one of the greatest minor league teams ever, along with a "pre-rookie" photograph of one of the game's great pitchers.  A scarce photograph of a very important team.
