For the past several auctions, we have featured signed magazines, yearbooks and programs from the estate of a former employee of Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego. In addition to being a dedicated through-the-mail autograph collector, he maintained a collection of periodicals and books that he had personally signed at Stadium events, as well as at other sporting events he attended. Our consignor has partnered with us to deliver several extraordinary signed pieces in each of our auctions, and this sale is no exception.
Presented here is one of the most remarkable pieces in the entire collection: a hardcover copy of Donald Honig's book The American League: An Illustrated History. One of dozens of baseball books written by Honig, this one details the history of the AL with a healthy dose of large, clear photographs - the kind our collector loved to have signed by their subjects.
This book has been signed by 53 players over the years, from the obscure to the Hall of Famers. Each player has signed in the book near or on his photo, resulting in an heirloom-quality piece that can be continuously expanded upon by dedicated collectors, or left as-is as an historical artifact.
The book itself is in strong condition, its dust jacket intact and its cover and spine exhibiting moderate wear but in strong condition. The inside front cover has a slight paper pull from where an address label was removed, to protect the identity of the collector and his family. It also has a much larger paper pull that, while not damaging the cover to any great degree, is clearly visible. The signatures contained herein are as follows: Bobby Doerr (HOF), Sid Hudson, Tommy Henrich, Hank Bauer, Minnie Minoso, Johnny Mize (HOF), Bob Lemon (HOF), Jimmy Piersall, Whitey Ford (HOF), Ray Boone, Frank Malzone, Harmon Killebrew (HOF), Bill Skowron, Jim Gentile, Bobby Richardson, Milt Pappas, Bo Belinsky, Harmon Killebrew (HOF), Tony Oliva, Frank Robinson (HOF), Mel Stottlemyre, Dean Chance, Denny McClain, Paul Blair, Jim Hunter (HOF), Rollie Fingers (HOF), Mike Cuellar, Vida Blue, Bert Campaneris, Gene Tenace, Dick Allen, Gaylord Perry (HOF), Brooks Robinson (HOF), Jim Palmer (HOF), Bert Blyleven (HOF), Fred Lynn, Sparky Lyle, Graig Nettles, Bobby Grich, Jorge Orta, Joe Rudi, Frank Tanana, Ken Singleton, Ron LeFlore, Carney Lansford, Amos Otis, Jim Sundberg, Rollie Fingers (HOF), Charlie Hough, Darrell Evans, Bill Buckner, Cory Snyder and Len Barker.
An absolutely outstanding document of the great players of the American League, undoubtedly an heirloom-quality piece to be handed down across generations.
*Please note that we are offering Honig's companion to this book, The National League, as a separate lot in this auction with 88 signatures.
