The great Cy Young, "delivering the goods" indeed, is represented here near the end of his incredible career.  Young would pitch in parts of three more seasons with Cleveland and Boston before retiring, but his 1908 season was still legendary.  On August 13 of that year, the American League honored Young by not scheduling any games, instead sending a group of "all-star" players to Boston to play an exhibition game against the Red Sox.  More than 20,000 fans attended to see Young pitch a few innings and receive accolades and gifts from players and fans alike.

The writing and dating of several examples of this postcard previously auctioned or displayed online would imply that this postcard was made available somehow to the attendees of that game on August 13, 1908.

This example, however, is proof that Young himself kept and used copies of this postcard himself, as it is Young's own pen three years after the end of his baseball career and mailed from his hometown of Peoli, Ohio, where Young tended to a sheep farm in retirement.  Addressed to Mr. & Mrs. Dr F. W. Whiting of Elgin, Oregon, the postcard opens with a note from what appears to be someone named "Nena," referring to her 5 little lambs and her learning to drive.  The letter continues in Young's hand, reading "Have you met a mule team with three cans of milk or white paint. Lately feeling fine.  Will write you a line one of these days.  Regards to you all."  The postcard is then signed by Young.

Considered by many to be the greatest pitcher to ever live, Young's career overlapped the late 1800s and early 1900s.  He pitched at a time when it was natural to complete games, and thus he ran up a lifetime record of 511 wins and 316 losses, both figures that will never again be touched.  This postcard is an outstanding glimpse into his post-retirement life (yet by sending a postcard featuring Young in uniform, Cy shows he was clearly clinging to his Hall of Fame career), a unique specimen of an interesting postcard.
