James Francis "Pud" Galvin was one of the most prolific pitchers in baseball history, throwing more than 6,000 innings with 646 complete games in his 15-year career.  In an era when baseball fans are accustomed to five-man pitching rotations and complaints of overwork when pitchers throw half a dozen complete games in a season, it's hard to fathom a pitcher throwing 70 complete games in a single season, and yet Galvin did just that - two seasons in a row.  Those seasons, 1883 and 84, gave Galvin consecutive 46-win seasons, with more than 600 innings pitched in each.

In 1889, Galvin became baseball's first 300-game winner, and his 365 lifetime wins still rank him at #5 today, behind only such enormous names as Cy Young, Walter Johnson, Grover Cleveland Alexander and Christy Mathewson.  Yet Galvin waited until 1965 - 63 years after his death - to be elected into the Hall of Fame.

This card (checklisted as #177-4), graded VG 3(MK) by PSA, is considered the 14th most scarce Hall of Famer in the monstrous N172 set.  With image fading typical of the issue, Galvin is pictured in a studio setting, wearing his jacket and leaning against a baseball bat.  With edge and corner wear consistent with the grade, the MK qualifier is a result of a back stamp that traces the card's provenance back to its original owner, who's family consigned his collection to us in late 2012 to be featured over three auctions.  All the collection's N172s are featured in this auction.
