Extraordinarily rare "fielding" pose variation, commonly regarded as a Cobb rookie card, from the 1907 Dietsche Postcards set.  Two Cobb poses were included with the issue - one more common example picturing Cobb at bat, and a second picturing him fielding.  The fielding pose, for some reason, is far more difficult to obtain than its counterpart.  The theory, of course, is that the "fielding" pose was made available in 1907 (supported by the copyright date on the card reverse), but was replaced in subsequent printings, while the "batting" pose was included in both 1907 and 1908.  According to PSA, 66 examples of the "batting" pose of Cobb's Dietsche issue have been graded, against just 12 of the "fielding" pose.  Unquestionably, this is a rare card.  In addition, while there are a number of different postcards issued in 1907 that feature Cobb, this is generally considered to be the earliest of them all, making it frequently referred to as his true rookie card.

This example is exceptionally attractive, with just four examples graded higher by SGC, boasting a relatively clean image with some visible chipping on the edges and corners that are so common to the issue.  Mild surface wear is evident, more pronounced on the back than the front, with no signs of writing or postal use.

As the rookie cards of prewar Hall of Famers begin to explode in value, we cannot help but point out the recent six-figure sales of rookie cards of Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth as evidence that the hobby values the first cards of its greatest players.  It is our opinion that the rookie cards of Ty Cobb have not begun to even approach its true value.  As rookie cards of postwar Hall of Famers reach six-figure territory on a regular basis, the Dietsche Postcard "fielding" pose of Ty Cobb is rare enough that it only makes itself available for public sale once a year or so.  Perhaps the most undervalued rookie card of one of the game's greatest players, an exceptional example of one of Ty Cobb's most difficult cards.
