Of the cards that have seen tremendous increases in sale prices in recent years, few have been hotter than the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle.  GOOD condition examples, obtainable in the $6,000 range as recently as early 2013 often sell for nearly twice that today,  and examples with strong eye appeal remain in particularly high demand.  The card is forever ingrained in hobby lore, often credited with launching the hobby's Golden Age, and certainly one of the most valuable and desirable cards in the hobby.

Presented here is a tremendous example, with vivid, clean color and exceptional centering.  Graded EX 5 by PSA, this is one of two variations of this card (the card was double printed, with very slight differences between the two) - this version is the one with the "tail" at the end of the "e" in Mantle's facsimile signature.  Just the second example of that version that we have offered for sale, our opinion is that this version has less blue color than the other, resulting in a warmer, more pleasing image (both are equally common).  Regardless, the classic image of Mantle is clean and crisp, with minor corner wear accounting for the grade of EX.  It should be noted that this card was submitted for grading in 2005, prior to PSA's establishment of the half-grade system they currently employ.

Atop the want list of thousands of collectors, experienced and novice alike, it is often stated that the 1952 Topps Mantle, along with the T206 Honus Wagner, are the best-recognized cards in the hobby.  Certainly, owning any '52 Mantle is a badge of collecting honor, but an example of this quality is truly a rarity. Such a well-centered, crease-free midgrade example with strong image quality and brilliant color bridges the gap between the more common, lower-grade examples and the ultra high-grade specimens affordable to very few in the hobby.  A '52 Mantle transcends the hobby, as a card that people outside the collecting world recognize at a glance.  Still one of baseball's best-recognized names, Mickey Mantle's 1952 Topps issue has clearly risen to the status of postwar collecting's most treasured card.
